WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. A random extra substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees higher trade value as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item that is used for the upgrade will remain in use for a long time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your equipment. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader every few weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item upgrading, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar Best item upgrade will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners for various currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. button, which will show an item's preview when it is upgraded when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and the current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade items discount and a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade are acquired via a variety of means that are both an improvement and a drawback.

Using these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once an item is at the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one purpose, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which can only be eligible to benefit from the account-wide discount if all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
