    Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

    The test for discourse completion (DCT) is a widely used instrument in the field of pragmatic research. It has many advantages, but it also has its drawbacks. For instance it is that the DCT cannot take into account cultural and individual differences in communication. Furthermore it is also the case that the DCT is prone to bias and may cause overgeneralizations. It is important to carefully analyze the data before it is used in research or assessment.

    Despite its limitations, the DCT can be a useful tool to investigate the connection between prosody, information structure, and non-native speakers. Its ability in two or more stages to manipulate the social variables that are related to politeness is a plus. This ability can be used to study the impact of prosody in different cultural contexts.

    In the field of linguistics, the DCT has emerged as one of the primary tools to analyze learners' behaviors in communication. They were also asked to provide reflections on their opinions and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results showed that CLKs frequently chose to reject native Korean pragmatism norms. The coding results are then contrasted with the original RI transcripts to determine if they captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.

    Refusal Interviews (RIs)

    The key question in pragmatic research is: why do some learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research attempted to answer this question by using several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants included 44 CLKs and 46 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were asked to complete the DCTs in their native language and to complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. Then they were invited to attend a RI where they were asked to reflect on their responses to the DCT situations.

    The results showed that CLKs on average, did not follow the norms of native speakers in more than 40 percent of their responses. They did this even though they were able to create patterns that were similar to native speakers. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal factors such as their identities, personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life experiences. They also referred to external factors, like relational benefits. They outlined, for instance how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social norms at their university.

    The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or consequences they might face when their social norms were not followed. This will help them better understand the effect of different cultural contexts on the behavior of students and classroom interactions of students in L2. This will also help educators create better methods for teaching and testing Korean pragmatics.
