If your key fob doesn't work There are a few simple steps that can fix it. The first step is to be sure it's not the backup remote.

If the backup remote is able to lock and unlock your car doors it is most likely an issue with the main remote. The most common causes for car remote key failure are battery or circuitry issues.

Battery

The battery inside a key fob can wear out over time. It is easy to replace batteries. However, it is important that you choose the right type. It is also important to check the battery compartment as batteries that are not working properly can release toxic chemicals that could damage the remote. If changing the batteries does not solve the issue it could be that there are other issues that require attention by a professional. If buttons are damaged or stuck for instance it might be necessary to remove the remote and rebuild each component. You could also try reprogramming your car to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Due to frequent use, key fobs may get dirty and worn. This is not unusual, but it can cause buttons to stop working or require a long press to function.
