    The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

    The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

    If this sensor fails the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

    Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

    I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

    I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

    4. ECU

    The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

    Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear.
